Answer

How do I validate a startup idea before building anything?

Short answer

Talk to ten people who have the problem, ask how they solve it today and what that costs them, then try to get a commitment before the product exists — a pre-order, a deposit, a signed letter of intent. Interest is not validation. A commitment of money or time is. This takes a week or two and costs nothing.

The most common reason startups fail is building something nobody needed, and it is also the cheapest failure to avoid. The information you need exists in conversations you have not had yet.

Ask about behaviour, not opinion. 'Would you use this?' produces polite lies. 'What did you do the last time this happened, and what did it cost you?' produces facts. The first question tells you nothing; the second tells you whether there is a problem worth money.

The strongest signal available before you build is a commitment. A pre-order, a paid deposit, a letter of intent, or someone volunteering to be the first customer and giving you a date. If ten people say it sounds great and none of them will commit to anything, you have learned something important.

Once you have that signal, a working product is the right next step — and at that point speed matters, because you have someone waiting.

The numbers

Step 1
Write the problem in one specific sentence naming who has it
Step 2
Interview 10 people who have it — not friends, not family
Step 3
Ask what they do today and what it costs them in time or money
Step 4
Ask for a commitment: pre-order, deposit, letter of intent, a date
Time and cost
1–2 weeks, $0
Strong signal
Someone offers money or a deadline before the product exists
Weak signal
Enthusiasm, email sign-ups with no follow-through, advice from other founders
