Do I need a technical co-founder to build an MVP?
Short answer
No. You need a working product; how it gets built is a separate question. A technical co-founder is valuable long term but costs 20 to 50 percent of your company and takes months to find, and the best ones want to see traction first. Paying for a first version, then recruiting from a position of proof, is usually the better order.
The case for a technical co-founder is real: continuous engineering capacity, someone invested in the outcome, and a structure investors expect in a venture-scale company. If you have found someone good who wants to build it with you, take that.
The problem is sequencing. Equity is close to irreversible, and giving away a third of the company to build version one of an idea that turns out to be wrong is the most expensive mistake available to a founder. Meanwhile the developers worth having are increasingly unwilling to join a slide deck.
Paying for the first version breaks the deadlock. A product with users is the strongest recruiting pitch there is, and you are negotiating from evidence rather than optimism.
One thing to be clear-eyed about: an outsourced build is not a substitute for engineering capacity. If the product works, you will need a developer. The point is to know that before you commit to one.
